Fit is everything. Life jackets go by body weight, not age, so weigh your child and match the kilos to the label instead of guessing. Pick one that fits now, not something roomy to grow into. Tug upwards: a jacket that's on properly shouldn't ride more than a couple of centimetres at the shoulders, and every strap and crotch fastening wants doing up snugly so it can't shift in the water.
