Your reel does the hard graft, so buy one made for salt. Ours run from front-drag spinning models for everyday shore and lure work up to bigger surf and boat reels built for distance and for holding ground in a tide. The Zebco Saltfisher 370 and Z-Cast SR 340 are dependable shore and surf options, the Quantum Torrent FD 360 covers general sea duties, and the Zcast FD 530 holds more line. If size and gearing feel like a maze, choosing a sea fishing reel lays out drag, ratios and capacity in plain English.
Match the reel to the fishing. A 3000 to 4000 front drag fishing reel is the sensible all-rounder for shore and light bottom work, and doubles as a saltwater spinning reel for chasing bass and mackerel on the move. Need to throw a heavy lead a long way and hold more line on an open beach? Step up to a 5000-plus or a dedicated surf fishing reel. For lure work, spinning for bass and mackerel covers how reel size and retrieve speed play off each other.
This section's small and honest. A handful of reels that pull their weight, not a wall of near-identical models. Several come as part of a matched outfit, so if you'd rather not pair things up yourself you can buy reel and rod together with the balancing sorted.
Salt is hard on gear. A freshwater rinse and a dry after every trip, plus the odd drop of reel oil, keeps any sea reel running smoothly for years in our damp Cornish air. It's the cheapest upgrade you'll ever make.
