ling are long and slender. Mottled green and brown in colour with white belly. There is a dark blotch at the rear of both dorsal fins. The second dorsal fin is feathery and reaches almost to the tail. The upper jaw is longer than the lower one and they have a barbel on the chin. They have needle sharp teeth.

Ling like rocky ground and are found on the bottom. The biggest ling are caught off boats and normally in deep water around wrecks and rough ground.
