The single most common mix-up in home smoking: buying chips for a cold smoker, or dust for a BBQ. They look like the same stuff at different sizes - they are actually fuels for two different machines. One rule sorts it forever: dust for cold, chips for hot.
Dust vs chips at a glance
| Wood dust | Wood chips | |
| Grade | Fine, flour-like | 7/20 fine or 20/160 coarse pieces |
| How it burns | Smoulders unaided once lit | Needs external heat to smoke |
| Temperature | Cold - below 30°C | Hot - 80-90°C and up |
