Common questions
- What should I look for in a smoking oven?
- Look for solid food-grade stainless steel, a tight-fitting lid, and a drip tray plus rack so fat doesn't fall onto the wood. Check it suits your hob (gas, electric or induction) and that it's sized for your household. Folding handles and nesting parts make storage much easier too.
- Should I buy a hot smoker or a cold smoker?
- For most people, start with a hot smoker. It cooks and flavours in one quick step and is very forgiving, so you'll get great results from day one. Cold smoking is wonderful for salmon, bacon and cheese, but it's slower and fussier about temperature - many cooks add a cold smoke generator later once they're hooked.
- Can you use a smoking oven indoors?
- Yes - a quality stovetop smoking oven like the Kitchen Craft Smoking Oven is designed for indoor use on the hob. The sealed lid keeps smoke inside, though it's always wise to open a window or run the extractor, as a little aroma escapes when you lift the lid.
- What size smoking oven do I need?
- Think about how many people you usually cook for. A compact single-rack smoker is ideal for one or two and stores away neatly, while a larger two-rack or outdoor model suits families and bigger batches. There's no need to over-buy - a smoker that fits your everyday cooking gets used far more.
- Do smoking ovens come with everything you need?
- Most do include the rack, drip tray and a starter sample of wood chips, so you can smoke straight out of the box. Our Complete Hot Smoking Kit pairs a smoker with wood chips to get you going, and you can add more flavours or a cold smoke generator whenever you like.
