What is included in the cold smoking starter kit?

You get a ProQ Cold Smoke Generator (the maze), four bags of wood dust — oak, apple, hickory and maple, each sized to fill the maze — and tealights to light it. You add the cabinet or BBQ, racks and food yourself.

How does the ProQ cold smoke generator work?

You fill the maze with wood dust, light one end with a tealight, then remove the flame. The dust smoulders slowly around the maze, giving off cool, clean smoke for an average of around 10 hours per fill.

How long does one fill of dust last?

On average around 10 hours, depending on the dust, airflow and conditions. That is long enough for most cold-smoking jobs such as salmon, cheese and bacon in a single session.

What can I cold smoke with this kit?

Cold smoking suits salmon and other fish, cheese, bacon and similar foods. Cold smoke adds flavour without cooking, so it is ideal for foods you want smoky but not hot-cooked.

Do I need a special smoker to use it?

No. The generator turns almost any cabinet or covered BBQ into a cold smoker. You just need somewhere to sit the maze with food on racks above and a little airflow.

Is this suitable for beginners?

Yes. It is designed as a starter kit, with the generator, four woods and tealights together, so you can try cold smoking without sourcing the parts separately.

What is the difference between cold and hot smoking?

Cold smoking flavours food at low temperatures without cooking it, which suits salmon and cheese. Hot smoking cooks and smokes at the same time. This kit is designed for cold smoking.

Can I buy more wood dust later?

Yes. Once you know your favourite flavours, you can top up with more wood dust, including variety packs and single woods, to keep cold smoking through the year.

Good kit. Real people.
