Common questions
- What length beachcaster should I buy?
- Most UK beach rods run from 11ft to 13ft, with 12ft (3.6m) the popular all-round choice. The extra length gives casting leverage and lifts your line clear of the surf, which matters on shallow or weedy beaches. Shorter 11ft rods are easier to handle in tight spots; longer 13ft rods squeeze out a little more distance.
- What casting weight do I need for beach fishing?
- Beachcasters are usually rated 100-200g (roughly 4-7oz). For most UK beaches a rod that comfortably handles 5-6oz (150-175g) covers light surf to moderate ground beautifully. Heavier rough-ground and big-tide marks may call for the upper end, while calm estuaries are fine with a lighter 4oz rating.
- What reel goes with a beach rod?
- A large fixed-spool reel in the 6000-8000 size is the easiest and most popular match, casting smoothly with mono or braid and holding plenty of line. Experienced casters sometimes prefer a multiplier for distance and control on clean ground, but a big fixed spool is the most forgiving starting point for beach work.
- Are beach rods suitable for beginners?
- Absolutely, especially if you love long sandy strands and want to fish at range for bass, flatfish, rays and cod. They're simple to use with a fixed-spool reel, and a beachcaster paired in a combo or kit makes a confident first outfit. Just match the casting weight to safe conditions and you'll be set.
- How much should I spend on a beach fishing rod?
- You can fish very happily without spending big. A reliable beachcaster, or a combo around £59.95-£79.80, will cover the vast majority of UK shore marks. Premium distance rods cost far more, but a sensibly priced model casts well, holds bottom and lands fish, which is exactly what most anglers need.
