Gwenver, sometimes written Gwynver, lies just north-east of Sennen Cove on the far western tip of Cornwall, within easy reach of Land's End. It is a wild, sandy beach set beneath steep granite cliffs and reached only on foot, down a path and steps that wind through the dunes, which keeps it quiet even when the wider coast is busy. By Arthurian legend the name recalls Guinevere, and there is something fittingly untamed about the place, with its big skies and long Atlantic horizon.
This is an exposed, west-facing beach, and the sea here is rarely still. Gwenver is known among surfers for picking up a wave even when the rest of the coastline is flat, which makes it a favourite with experienced riders, though the same powerful swell and currents mean it rewards a careful read of the conditions. At low tide the sand stretches out and links up with neighbouring Sennen Cove, doubling the space to roam.
