Black Rock Beach

Black Rock sits at the southern end of Widemouth Bay, a few miles south of Bude, named for the dark rocky outcrop that frames it. At low tide it opens into a wide playground of firm sand, rock ridges and pools, while the point and reef draw surfers to its waves.

Black Rock takes its name from the dark, weather-stained outcrop that rises from the sand at the southern end of Widemouth Bay, a few miles down the coast from Bude. Where the wide, open bay gives way to ledges and broken cliff, the character of the shore changes – firmer underfoot, more rugged, and noticeably quieter than the main bay to the north.

It is at its best on a falling tide, when the sea draws back to reveal long ribs of rock, shallow pools and stretches of firm sand. The pools here are rich with marine life, and the beach has long been a favourite with families turning over rocks in search of crabs and anemones, and with dog walkers who appreciate the year-round access. When a swell arrives, the point and reef can shape some punchy waves that draw surfers down from the busier breaks.

Part of the appeal is its slightly untamed feel. Sections of the shore tuck in beneath the cliffs, so it pays to keep an eye on the rising tide, but that same wildness is what gives Black Rock its quieter, more elemental atmosphere.
