What makes Porthluney unusual is its setting: a generous arc of sand that is barely overlooked by a single building, with the turrets of Caerhays Castle and its wooded valley rising behind instead. The castle was designed by the architect John Nash around two centuries ago, and the estate that surrounds it has kept the cove feeling private and unspoilt.
There is sand to be found at every state of the tide, and when the sea retreats it uncovers a broad expanse of firm sand along with some excellent rock pools tucked along the western edge. Being reasonably sheltered, it has long been a relaxed choice for families and for slow afternoons by the water.
