Lusty Glaze occupies the northern end of Newquay's bay, just before Porth, a sheltered cove almost entirely enclosed by towering cliffs that rise some two hundred feet above the sand. The effect is of a natural amphitheatre, the golden beach held within a horseshoe of rock and reached by a long flight of steps cut down from the clifftop. Privately run yet open to all, it has a character quite distinct from Newquay's larger public beaches, intimate and a little theatrical.
The cove began life as a working site tied to mining and trade, and over the years it has been reshaped into a relaxed beach resort with a cafe-bar set right on the sand. Today it is as well known for what happens here as for the beach itself, with an established activity centre offering climbing, abseiling, high ropes and watersports against that dramatic cliff backdrop, and a programme of live music and events that makes the most of the amphitheatre setting through the warmer months.
