Crantock Beach

Crantock is a classic golden beach just across the Gannel estuary from Newquay, owned by the National Trust and backed by rolling dunes and the wildlife-rich grasslands of Rushy Green. Its broad sands and headland walks are a real draw, though the River Gannel sets up currents that can be dangerous, especially on an outgoing tide.

Common questions

Where is Crantock Beach?
Crantock lies on Cornwall's north coast just south-west of Newquay, across the River Gannel estuary, beside the village of Crantock. Fistral Beach sits on the far side of the Gannel towards Newquay.
What is Crantock Beach known for?
It is known for its wide golden sand, backing dunes and the scenic Gannel estuary that runs along one side. A National Trust beach, it is popular for surfing, swimming and walks over the headland and through the dunes of Rushy Green.
Is the River Gannel dangerous at Crantock?
It can be, so take care. The Gannel estuary creates currents that are strongest on an outgoing tide, and the channel can shift across the beach. Swim where lifeguards advise in season and keep clear of the river channel.
