Chapel Porth Beach

Chapel Porth is a rugged, National Trust-owned beach on the wild north coast near St Agnes, set in a steep valley beneath dramatic cliffs. Famous for the Wheal Coates mine engine house on the cliffs above, it offers a broad sweep of golden sand at low water, but the incoming tide pushes hard against the cliffs, so take care not to get cut off.

Common questions

Where is Chapel Porth Beach?
Chapel Porth lies on Cornwall's north coast just south-west of St Agnes, along the St Agnes Heritage Coast. It sits at the foot of a steep National Trust valley, with the village of Porthtowan the next beach along to the south-west.
What is Chapel Porth known for?
It is known for its rugged beauty, powerful Atlantic surf and the iconic Wheal Coates mine engine house perched on the cliffs above. The beach is also famous for its mining heritage and its small National Trust car park and cafe at the valley mouth.
Does the tide cut off Chapel Porth?
Yes, take care. At high tide the sea pushes right up to the base of the cliffs, greatly reducing the sand and cutting off sections of the beach. Always check tide times before you visit and keep an eye on the incoming water.
